Male and female individuals with causative SHOX2 variants have been described. All individuals have presented early-onset atrial fibrillation before the age of 60 years. The identified SHOX2 non-coding variant primarily occurred in a distinct subgroup of atrial fibrillation patients with electrocardiographic alterations (prolonged PR-intervals), reflecting prolonged atrial conduction.
