The disease is mainly characterized by urocanic aciduria, which means that in urine the level of urocanic acid is high. This deficiency also presents with intellectual disability and ataxia. Ataxia is a neurological sign consisting of lack voluntary coordination of muscle movements (specially gait abnormality, although speech and ocular movements can also be affected).
