Meckel Syndrome (MKS) is a serious genetic disorder that causes death of babies after they are born. Babies with MKS often have extra fingers or toes, cysts in their kidneys, neural tube defects, and brain problems.
Three babies from two families showed the usual signs: a brain problem where part of the brain bulges out, extra fingers and toes, and kidney cysts. Some also had other issues like missing parts of the brain, split uvula, small or misshaped genitals, bent leg bones, and liver problems.
There is another condition called Joubert Syndrome type 34. It shows a special brain shape on imaging and extra fingers or toes. People with it can have seizures, cleft palate, heart problems, hearing loss, different-looking faces, and unusual genitals.
