Sialidosis is a very rare inherited disease that happens in about 1 in 4 million babies born in white populations. It is caused by a problem in a gene called NEU1, which leads to a lack of an important enzyme called neuraminidase. This causes harmful substances to build up in the body's cells, which damages them over time.
There are two main types of sialidosis: type I and type II.
