SARS1

Management

While there is no cure for SARS1-related disorders, there are many ways to manage the symptoms and support your child's health and development. This involves building a dedicated care team and exploring potential treatments.

Building Your Child's Care Team
Your child will benefit from a team of specialists who work together to provide comprehensive care. This team may include:

●    A pediatric neurologist to help manage seizures and movement issues like ataxia and spasticity.
●    Therapists, including physical, occupational, and speech therapists, who are essential for helping your child build skills and reach their full potential.
●    A geneticist and genetic counselor to help you understand the diagnosis, how it is inherited, and what it means for your family.
●    A cardiologist (heart doctor) and an audiologist (hearing specialist) for regular check-ups to monitor heart health and hearing.
●    A nutritionist or gastroenterologist to help with any feeding difficulties and ensure your child is growing well.

A Potential Treatment: L-serine Supplements
The SARS1 gene's job is to use a natural substance called L-serine to help build proteins. In children with this condition, that process is much slower or less efficient than it should be.

Researchers have been studying whether giving high doses of L-serine as a dietary supplement can help. The idea is that providing more of this building block might help the body's protein-building machinery work a bit better, even with the faulty enzyme.

Some families who have participated in these studies have reported improvements in their child's growth, development, and ability to handle illnesses. This is a new and promising area of research, but it is still being studied.

It is extremely important that you do not start giving your child any new supplement, including L-serine, without talking to your child's doctor or a metabolic specialist. They can determine if this treatment might be appropriate for your child, discuss the potential risks and benefits, and prescribe the correct and safe dose.
