ANO10

Management

Some affected individuals with ANO10 variants have been found to have low levels of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) in their muscles. This substance is found primarily in the mitochondria inside the cells and is essential for energy production. There exists a correlation between increased severity of ataxia and low levels of CoQ10. Affected individuals might benefit from CoQ10 administration. However, more research is needed to understand how the amount of CoQ10 in a patient relates to how severe their symptoms are. Furthermore, the evaluating clinician can give symptomatic treatment for the improvement of specific symptoms, such as swallowing impairment, dysphagia, eye symptoms or more.

Similar to other diseases belonging to the group of ARCAs, regular follow-up (i.e. every six months) of patients with ANO10 variants is recommended to monitor their impairments and evaluate the progression of the disease.
