A mutation in the ATOH1 gene was detected in one Iraqi Jewish family, with eighteen hearing impaired family member over 5 generations. The hearing loss in this family is progressive, starting at birth or in early childhood. The mode of inheritance is dominant, i.e., the hearing impaired individuals carry one copy of the mutation, and each child of a carrier has 50% chance to inherit the mutation causing hearing loss.
