The CNTNAP2 gene encodes a protein called CASPR2, which is expressed throughout the central nervous system and plays a role in proper neuronal migration and synaptic transmission.
In the majority of cases, two mutations are necessary to cause the disease. Patients with a single mutation require appropriate genetic counseling to establish its association with the clinical presentation, if compatible.
