KCNN3 gene encodes a small ion channel. When a mutation occurs in the gene, the channel does not function as intended. These channels can be found in various tissues all over the body and serve various functions, that´s why ZLS is a syndromic disease – it has symptoms in different body systems. The precise biological mechanism of how ion channel disorders cause syndromic diseases and intellectual disability is unknown.
