Danon disease causes problems in the hearts of boys and girls/women. These problems are often called ‘cardiomyopathies’ and can lead to symptoms of shortness of breath, fatigue, and heart palpitations. At the moment it appears that all boys and nearly all girls/women will develop enough heart disease to need a heart transplant at some point during their lives. Boys also experience muscle weakness and mild intellectual problems. One study found that the average age of first recognized symptom was 12 years in boys and 27 years in women. It is also clear that some women will develop disease in adolescence that is nearly as severe as what is seen in boys. Danon disease is extremely rare and the true prevalence is not known. Danon disease is a genetic condition that is inherited in a sex-linked fashion and this is often referred to as X-linked inheritance.
