CELF4 is required for proper CNS development and function. CELF4 haploinsufficiency may be encountered in patients with chromosome 18q12 deletion which is diagnosed by high resolution karyotype or comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) array analyses. Most patients had de novo deletions, however some patients inherited CELF4 haploinsufficiency from an affected or an healthy parent.
