Babies with generalized arterial calcification of infancy (GACI) are found to have calcium build-up in their vessels either in the womb, or soon after birth. This typically leads to an inability of the heart to adequately pump blood. High blood pressure is common. Mortality has been reported as 69% without specific treatment, and 35% with specific treatment (bisphosphonates). Children who survive develop rickets in the majority of cases. Hearing loss is also a frequent finding. The disease affects about 1 in 200,000 people.
