Functional analysis of variants in a cell system demonstrated gain of function in severely affected DEE cases and loss of function in a case with a milder phenotype (GGE) as the underlying pathomechanisms. This shows that the underlying mechanism of the disease seems to be complex and is maybe influenced by differentiated expression of the channel or other influences not known yet.
