MFF is a gene that produces a protein responsible for the fission of cellular structures called mitochondria and peroxisomes. Mitochondria are the energy producing component of the cells. Peroxisomes are structures involved in lipid metabolism and the conversion of reactive oxygen species (which are dangerous to the cell) into safer molecules. Mutations in MFF cause failure in the fission of these structures and results in the clinical manifestations described in the Clinical Characteristics Section.
