NKAP-related syndrome is due to a genetic change in the NKAP gene. In about 2/3 of the previously reported individuals with NKAP-related syndrome, their genetic change was brand-new, and was not inherited from their parents. However, in the remaining 1/3, their genetic change was inherited from their mother.
