Some of the characteristics commonly associated with AMDM include abnormally shaped vertebrae or skull, bowing of the long bones, short and stubby toes and fingers, short stature, and kyphosis (increased front-to-back curvature of the spine). The skeletal system appears to be the only system affected in AMDM. Dwarfism becomes apparent in the first years of life as the bones of the forearms, lower legs, hands and feet do not grow proportionally with the rest of the body. Although most individuals with AMDM have normal facial features and intelligence, affected individuals have also been known to have an enlarged forehead and short nose.
