Inherited mutations in the SLF2 gene usually cause the protein produced from the gene to be unstable. This prevent cells from dealing with specific types of DNA damage when cells try to duplicate their DNA. This leads to chromosomal abnormalities such as increased chromosome number and chromosome segmentation, which can be used a diagnostic test for Atelís syndrome.
