The PLA2G6 gene carries instructions to create a protein that breaks down fats known as lipids. When the PLA2G6 gene is changed, the breakdown of lipids is affected, which may result in damage to nerves in the brain and other parts of the body, and, ultimately, in a build-up of iron in the brain.
