Management

Treatment for PLAN is symptomatic as there currently is no cure. Gene therapy research is ongoing. A multi-discipline effort including neurologists, ophthalmologists, psychiatrists, rehabilitation therapies (speech, feeding, physical and occupational) and coordination by complex care professionals is required to manage symptoms. As the disease progresses, feeding tubes and pulmonary hygiene may be required.
For infantile and juvenile PLAN, pharmacologic treatment with baclofen, either oral or intrathecal, is common, in addition to routine seizure medications.
For adult PLAN, dopaminergic agents should be considered. Treatment by a psychiatrist for those with neuropsychiatric symptoms is recommended.
